Shouxian, an ancient capital of four dynasties with a history of over 2,000 years

安徽/Anhui 4 photos

Shouxian County (ancient name: Shouzhou) in Lu'an City, Anhui Province was an ancient capital of four dynasties with a population of over 100,000 as early as more than 2,000 years ago. Once the largest city in Anhui, it witnessed the rise and fall of the Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties. Traces of long history can still be found everywhere across present-day Shouxian. Situated at a strategic hub connecting the Yangtze and Huaihe Rivers, the city wall has always been elaborately constructed throughout history. Rebuilt repeatedly since the Song Dynasty, the well-fortified ancient city wall with four intact gates stands to this day. Facing south and sitting north, Shouxian Confucian Temple was first built in the Yuan Dynasty and later developed into a grand and complete architectural complex. It features the three memorial archways of Panguang, Kuaidu and Yanggao, as well as the Pan Pond, Halberd Gate, Memorial Halls for Distinguished Officials and Local Virtuous Men, Hall of Enlightenment and Kuiguang Pavilion. https://www.orientroam.com/tour_detail.php?id=25#pane-itinerary
